Project Title
The dynamics of the Southern Ocean

Brief Description for General Publications
Numerical ocean models will be used to investigate the dynamics of the global ocean circulation, focusing on the role of the Southern Ocean. We will examine the effect that small-scale flow features (such as eddies and jets, which cannot be resolved by standard ocean and climate models) have on large-scale circulation. The results will be used to guide parameterisations and model development of large-scale ocean models. In addition, during 2012 we will build the foundations of a high resolution global ocean model with the aim of enabling Australia's capacity for high resolution ocean-climate models in the near future.
